Merchant mariners must know how to. swim. The United States shipping board has added lessons in swimming to its course for apprentices. It is said that any number of seamen, picked at random, and. compared with an equal number of men picked from land industries, will show about 25 per cent fewer men able to care for themselves Wthe water. Many sailors are unable to ewim even a few strokes.
