POULTRY RAISERS SHOULD CONFINE ALL MALE BIRDS WHEN HATCHING SEASON ENDS
Confine Male Fowls, Except During Breeding Season, for Benefit of Egg Industry.
(Prepared by the United States Department of Agriculture.) A bad egg tasted is a good egg wasted, to the extent that Madam Hen often is criticized where she should be eulogized. Industriously the hen works to. lay an egg a day, and other conditions being equal, the egg as produced.is as nearly a perfect food product as fowl ingenuity can make it. If the hen is properly fed, if the nests are clean, if the eggs are gathered twice daily, stored in a cool, dry room or -cellar and delivered to the city consumer in prime condition, the consumer grins appreciation as he breakfasts on shirred eggs of matchless market quality. On the other hand, if the roosters are allowed to run with the flock after the hatching season, if the hens are not properly and regularly fed, If the nests are dirty and crowded, if the eggs are gathered only once every other day, and if thereafter the eggs are stored in warm, ill-ventilated quarters and if marketing is deferred until enough eggs have collected to fill a crate, the city consumer usually grunts disgust and shouts, for a gas mask when the eggs appear opposite him at the table. Bad Eggs Preventable. Bad eggs are not the result of accident; they are examples of neglect, slovenly management, and shiftlessness. It is just as easy to produce and market good quality eggs as it is to offend consumers with stale, fertile eggs. Farmers lose approximately $30,000,000 a year from bad methods of producing and handling eggs. One-
“FOOTPRINT” MARKS TO IDENTIFY FOWLS
Farmers Should Avoid Confusion by Marking Chicks. System Outlined Offers Practical Means of Identification as Efficient as Bertillon System of Recording Criminals. (Prepared by the United States Department Of Agriculture.) It is a practice of some poultrymen and farmers to maintain old hens in the flock and to cull the* younger hens and pullets because of the difficulty in distinguishing between the birds after the pullets have matured. Farmers should avoid such confusion by marking the young chicks in the web of the foot with a toe punch before they are transferred to the brooder or the brood coop. A system such as the following Offers practical means of identification for chickens: ‘ The bird without any holes punched in the web of either foot should be (known as No. 1; No. 2 has a punch mark in the right half of the right foot; No. 3 bears a mark in the left of the right foot; No. 4 shows a mark in the right side of the left foot ; No. 5 a similar mark in the left half of the left foot; No. 6 bears marks in both sides of the right foot, while No. 7 carries similar marks in both sides of the left foot. Bird No. 8 is identified by a mark in the left side of the right foot and another on the right side of the left foot, while No. 9 is known by a mark in the right side of the right foot and the left side of the left foot; No. 10 shows a mark In the left side of the right foot and the left side of the left foot, while No. 11 is marked on the right side of the right foot and the test side of the right foot. This system Of marking may be continued indefinitely according to the ingenuity of the individual poultryman in mapping out a footprint schedule. It provides means of identification for fowl as efficient as the Bertillon system of finger-print records of criminals.

third of this loss is preventable, because it is due to partial hatching of fertile eggs which have been allowed to become 'warm enough to begin to Incubate. The rooster makes the egg fertile, while the fertilized egg produces the blood ring which is the partial development of the'chick. The rooster does not Increase, egg production; he merely fertilizes the germ of the egg, and hence he should be allowed to run with the flock only during the hatching season. Heat the Enemy of Eggs. Summer heat has the same effect on fertile eggs as the hen or incubator. The fertile germ in hot weather quickly develops into a blood ring which spoils the egg for food or market purposes. Heat is the great enemy of eggs, both fertile and infertile. On this account specialists of the United States department of agriculture urge poultry producers in warm weather to keep nests clean and to provide one nest for every four fowls, in order that the nest will not be used too often and soil the eggs; to gather the eggs twice daily; to keep the eggs in a cool, dry room or cellar; to market the eggs at least twice a week, and to pen or dispose of all roosters as soon as the hatching season is over. Hens isolated on range and pasture from the male birds produce infertile eggs of desirable market qualify. In general, about two weeks after the roosters are removed from the flock the hens will again yield infertile eggs.
DUCKS FOR MARKET
(Prepared by the United States Department of Agriculture.) Ducklings to be marketed should be fattened for two weeks before killing on a ration made of three parts, by weight, of cornmeal, two parts of middlings, one part of bran, onehalf part of beef scrap, with three per cent grit and ten per cent green feed added to this mash, or a mash of three parts cornmeal, one part low-grade w’heat flour, one part bran, onefourth part beef scrap with the green feed and grit, and three per cent oyster shell added.. Feed this mash three times daily, giving all the ducklings will clean up in a half hour. The green feed is sometimes left out of the ration during the last seven days of fattening, as it tends to color the meat and ma'y produce a slightly flabby rather than firm flesh; however, it is easier to keep the ducklings in good feeding condition on a mash containing green feed.
POULTRY NOTES
Keep the house dry at all times, • • • Have your birds as nearly alike In color and shape as possible. • * • Young chicks should not be fed from 24 to 36 hours after hatching. * * * More chicks are killed by improper feeding than die from other causes. • • • Never breed from a half-grown male bird and expect high vitality in your chicks. * • • Turkeys like other stock or poultry must be kept clean, healthy and happy to thrive. - ,• • • Have the male strong in point* where the females are weakest and vice versa. ' ' X < - 1 ♦ -■ 4 Breed only from sfbck with high vitality which never has been affected by disease. Proper warmth and proper feeding are the two main essentials in th< early life of the baby chick. • • • A good first feed for little turkeys, little chicks, little ducklings and little goslings is stale, but not' moldy or musty, bread, moistened with freshly soured milk.
YIELD BIG CROPS Grain Seeds From Western Can? ada Do Well in Ohio. ; Demand for Them Is Bound to Add Value to the Xand of Our Northern Neighbor, Now to Be Had Cheap. A large area of the land in several counties in Ohio prepared for spring seeding will be seeded wfffi Marquis wheat —a spring variety. This wheat is imported from Western Canada. It was about three years ago that the first of this seed was imported into the States, and the result, watched each succeeding year, proved that Ohio soil and spring seeding was a success. The demand for the seed has now become so great that one of the largest seed houses in the state, that has been purchasing from Western Canada farmers and importing it, has decided to purchase a large block of land In that country for the purpose of growing the grain themselves. They will devote a considerable portion of their Western Canada holdings to growing oats, barley and rye. Their action is a strong indorsement of the product. For some time past a considerable quantity of seed oats has also been imported' The prolific yield reported was what probably gave an impetus to the Introduction of wheat. It was found, though, after a couple of years the quality of the oats, as well as the yield, began to deteriorate when grown seed was used, making it necessary for frestr importations every couple of years. It Is possible that the same experience may follow the growing of Western Canada wheat. Tn fact it is quite probable, and the Ohio farmer will find it necessary to import every two years. With the success that has followed the Ohio farmers’ experiments with this imported seed it is possible other states now growing winter wheat will begin growing spring wheat. It may therefore be taken for granted that Western Canada, in addition to its ability to produce hundreds of millions of bushels of wheat possessing the greatest percentage of gluten of any wheat in the world, will-shortly he called upon to provide the seed that will he grown on the additional acres in'the United States that may be devoted to spring wheat. It is a well-established fact that the further north any product of the farm can be brought to a state of maturity, the more vigorous It becomes. This has been proven in the grains that have been produced In Western Canada ; it has been shown in the development of Its horses. Its cattle, its sheep and its hogs; also In its people. The neighbor to the north really has a splendid future before him, and many years will not have passed before the lands that are selling today at much less than their producing value will bring prices more commensurate with their true worth than they do today. Think of lands that yield in their operation a profit of from fifteen to twenty-five dollars an acre a year selling at figures less than S4O an acre. It does not require a mathematician to figure the percentage of profit. ,It Is unfair to these lands to ask them to continue these profits for long. So It ,is safe to make the prediction that In a very few years they will place themselves on a parity with other lands that tqday produce less and sell tor much more. —Advertisement.

SEEMED TO LIKE THE CITY
At Any Rate, Few Statesmen Expressed a Desire to Return to the Old Farm. During the debate on the farm tenantry resolution in the house of representatives, one loquacious orator sought to enlist all the farm members on his side. “Every -member of this house who was raised on a farm please hold up his right hand,” he cried. Most of the members raised their hands. “How’ many of you still live on the farm?” he next asked. About half the members still did. “How many of you who Ifeft the farms want to go back?” This time not a hand went up. “The farms are in great luck,” rasped the orator.
Coal May Make Sweden Rich.
Deposits of coal in Sweden, discovery of which was reported recently from Stockholm, may help to solve one of Sweden’s most difficult industrial problems. Sweden has an almost Inexhaustible supply of very fine iron ore an IS wedish scientists for years have unsuccessfully attempted to devise means of working it by electricity. With a coal supply at home it is pointed out that Sweden has an opportunity ta become one of the great industrial countries of the world. The rising cost of labor in Great Britain already has placed England at a disadvantage with the United States in the Italian coal trade and if Sweden could produce coal in quantities warranting export she doubtless would become a competitor of both the United States and England.
