Many freak things have happened in the young life of Rube Schauer, formerly with the Giants and who was with the Athletics until drafted into military service. .However, the best one on the Rube is the time he pitched five innings against Detroit in an exhibition game,' 'thinking that Oscar Vitt was Ty Cobb. The Giants knew that if Schauer would pitch to Cobb not, knowing it was Ty he would get by all right. They pointed out Vitt and said: ‘'He’s the boy you got to stop."
