OBITUARY
William C. Garland was born near Rensselaer, in Warren county, Ind., August 14, 1842, and departed this life at Rensselaer, Ind., March 31, 1919. He was the son of Jesse and Ella Garland both. of whom died while he was very young. After the death of his parents he made his home with his grandparents on a farm near Rensselaer until 1863, when he enlisted as a member of Co. A. 128th Ind. Vol. Inf. at Oxford. He took part in the battles of Nashville, Franklin, Lookout Mountain and others up to and including the siege of Atlantac. After the war he returned to Warren county. He was united in marriage to Miss Ella Henderson, and to this union were born four children, John, of Rensselaer; Mrs.' Clement Jones, of Pine Village; and Mrs. Wm. Gordan and Mrs. Geo. Chambers, of Rensselaer. On Nov. 10, 1879 he was again married, to Mrs. Wm. Hickok. From this marriage three children survive, Jerry and Charles, of Refisselaer and Mrs. Frank Barton, of Detroit, tylich. In 1902 he moved to a farm in Jasper county, Ind., and continued farming until F6b. 1917, when he moved to Rensselaer, living here until the time of his death. Funeral services were held at the home, April 3, 1919, at 2:30 p. m., conducted by Rev. Strecker. Interment was made in Weston cemetery, the G. A. R., of which he was a member conducting the ceremony.
