DARK EQUINE FIVES UEAP TO FORE IN BASKET CHASE Lafayette, Feb. 14.—Just aboutthe time the basketball experts had their favorites for cihampions in the twenty sectional meets, to be held on March 7 and 8, and even their choice for the winner of the state tournament to 'be held at Purdue university, Lafayette, March 13, 14 and 15, cut out of the dope sheet and placed in the sport sun to dry, along comes some “bushtown” teams traveling at such a high rate of speed that the “cut but favorites"r~were" 'brushed away and now the dopesters have to do it all over again. Even the conservative fans were keeping a weathered eye on the performances of Crawfordsville, Lebanon, the present title holder, Bloomington, Anderson, Columbus, and Jefferson, of Lafayette, feeling confident that one of these teams could be depended upon to come through the sectional tourneys victorious and perform in the tournament to be held at Purdue to decide the champion high school basketball; team in Indiana.
But as the last lap of the basketball race opens “small to teams” are staging spectacular performances, and for the 'moment the fans are eagerly watching the work of these dark horses which are forging to the front as the end of the final heat and race draws nigh. The state champion 'Lebanon aggregation received a pair of body blows recently. One was administered by Liston, and Advance doled Out what might be a K. O. punch. Lizton, practically unheard of, having been practicing on an open air court throughout the -mild winter season, played the state champs to a standstill in a 28 to 28 e tie game. The tilt was played at Lebanon and was fiercely contested, the technique of the Lebanon tossers being offset by the excellent physical condition by practicing in the open and set a terrific pace. Then Advance walloped Lebanon 24 to 5. Other interesting games last week were Bloomington’s 22 to 18 victory over Jefferson, of Lafayette, in air overtime game, and Columbus’s victories over Franklin and Danville. While the high school teams are’ fighting it out arrangements are being completed at Purdue for the handling of the large crowd that plans to attend the state tournament* which will be held here. The housing committee assures all the fans that everyone who sojourns here during the tourney will have a desirable place to five. Many novel schemes of entertainment are also being evolved. Mrs. W. & Day went to Anderson Thursday for a visit with her daughter, Glenn, who is employed in the public schools of that city.
