Thousands of young fruit trees are annually injured and many are killed by ml<te and rabbits that gnaw the trees just above the ground. Frequently young trees are completely girdled. This trouble can be largely avoided by protecting the lower part of the tree trunk by banking it with earth late in the fall or by wrapping the trunk with building paper or even old newspaperWood veneer and wire mesh tree guards may "be purchased in the market. One or more of these precautions ought by all means to be taken as a nfeans of protecting the young tree.
