China had women soldiers long before they were known in Russia. During the Tae Ping rebellion 1,850 wome nas well as men served in the ranks. In Nanking, in 1853,, pa army of 500,000 women was recruited. They were divided into brigades of 13,000 each and were commanded by women officers.
