One of those individuals who has leisure enough to dig into the records of days long past has unearthed what is said to be the first advertisement .ever published of a preparation for cleaning and preserving the teeth, observes a writer in the New York Evening World. It appeared 258 years ago, and, though the language is a bit involved, the writer needed no lessons from modern publicity experts in claiming virtues for bis product The “ad” was printed in the Mercurios Politicus of Leith, Scotland, in 1600, and reads: “Most Excellent and Approved Dentifrices to scour and cleanse the Teeth, making them white as Ivory, preserves from Toothache; so that being constantly used, the parties using it are never troubled with the Toothache; it fastens the Teeth, sweetens the Breath and preserves the Mouth and Gums from Cankers and Imposthumes. Made by Robert .turner, Gentleman; and the rights are only Jo be had at Thomas Rooker, Stationer, at the Holy Lamb at the East end of St Paul’s church, near the School, in sealed papers, at 12d the paper. The reader IS desired to beware of counterfeits.”
