JASPER COUNTY COUNCIL OF DEFENSE
The Jasper county council of defense met in regular session in this city Wednesday afternoon with the following present: Frank Welsh, J. M. Sauser, M. L. Sterrett, W. J. Wright, E. W. Strecker, F. E. Babcock, E. N. Loy, R. D. Thompson, Moses Leopold, G. H. McLain, J. J. Montgomery, J. J. Hunt, L. H. Hamilton, W. L. Bott, C. G, Spitler, Frank Fisher, J. B. Fleming, Ernest Morlan, J. F. Mitchell, Stewart Learning, W. D. Bringle, W. S. Day, O. JC Rainier, Abraham Halleck and S. C. Irwin and Mesd'ames C. W. Hanley, E. M. Graham, Ora T. Rods, George M. Meyers, John I. Gwin, J. J. Hunt, Jesse D. Allman and A. H. Hopkins. Chaiman Frank Welsh presided. Minutes of the meeting of July stii, was read and approved. W. L. Bott, of the Liberty Guards committee, reported that they were making progress and asked for an extension of time for full report. The request was granted. A communciation from the state council of defense in reference to public improvement was read and referred to the following special committee: Moses Leopold, J. J. Hunt and F. E. Babcock. Mayor Spitler reported that the city of Rensselaer has now a War Loafers ordinance in force. Mrs. John I. Gwin from the Child Welfare committee reported that the work in that line was progressing satisfactorily and that a movement for five hundred members for the Tuberculosis society was under way in this county. . E. N. Loy from the conscription board was before the council and suggested an organization of the registrants at the county. He also asked that a Committee be appointed to co-operate with the local board and that they be instructed to investigate complaints. Chairman Welsh appointed the following commitee: 0. K. Rainier, J. B. Fleming and J. M. Sauser. A committee was appointed by Chairman Welsh consisting of Moses Leopold, F. E. Babcock and C. G. Spitler to make investigation as to the number of selectmen being drafted from this county. A motion asking the farmers of this county to increase the production of wheat as much as possible was unanimously carried. County Agent Stewart Learning reported that a considerable amount of Rosen Rye would be sown by the farmers of thia county this fall. Mrs. Charles Hanley, chairman of the War Mothers organization of the county, reports that the service flag which is to be presented to the county had arrived. The flag will be presented at the patriotic meeting to be held here Monday, August sth. The following committee was appointed to make all necessary arrangements for the patriotic meeting which will ibe addressed by M. E. Foley, chairman of the state council of defense, C. G. Spitler, E. W. Strecker, 0. K. Rainier, Mrs. E. M. Graham and Mrs. George M. Meyers. Mr. Foley will speak here in the evening of August sth. Ernest Mbrlan, of the threshermen’s committee, reported that in some parts of the county there was a disposition to let the wheat remain in shock until the oats were cut and threshed. The matter was left to him and the county food administrator, John Eger. Rev. J. B. Fleming reported that the Red Cross would from now on have a canteen, service for all departing soldiers/ The next meeting of the council wiR be held on Wednesday, August 7th, at 2 p. m.
