FORD AND RALSTON.
The names of Edsall Ford and Julian Ralston get into the of fame together. Young Ford, son of Henry Ford, the Wilson man who was handpicked by President Wilson to be the Republican senatorial nominee in Michigan, was exempted by Washington influences and dodged the selective service law. Young Ralston, son of ex-Governor Samuel M. Ralston, of Indiana, the Tatter supposedly picked for the Democratic nomination for United States senator in Indiana dn 1920, has also been exempted from the draft law. Mr. Ford has succeeded thus far in keeping his own boy “out of the trenches. Mr. Ralston’s soh is in a government bomb-proof job at Washington. It is understood the State Department suggested that young Ralston be exempted because of his “aptitude” for certain work which admittedly could and should be done by an older man or by a woman. It must be a little embarrassing for a man like Ford, or for a man like Ralston, with such family records, to go forth and rail against slackers or dodgers. Incidentally, recently exposed facts may prevent former Governor Ralston, when he takes the stump this fall, from falling into the habit acquired by some of the demogogic Democratic spellbinders who have been impugning the motives and questioning the sincerity of the war activity of all Republicans whenever the opportunity presented itself.
