MAN HIDES IN A CAVE—VAIN EFFORT TO KEEP OUT OF WAR
. Joliet, Hl., June 7.—With his clothes literally “crusted” to him, hair hanging down over his shoulders, eyes sunken and countenance pallid, Edward F. Schaffer, 29 years old, was dragged from a cave built in the cellar of his home, 1104 Oakland ave., and today faces a charge Schaffer begged to be told what would be done to him. “What have I done; why are they keeping me here?" he cried when questioned by federal Living in his cellar throughout the entire day and nearly every night, Schaffer was able to evade army service more than a year. Police declare that he took to his case early in June, 1917. The cave was built in a wall of the cellar. It was boarded up and covered with dark clothes. It was less than five feet square and contained a fallen down stove and a dilapidated bunk. Schaffer was asleep on it when found. Schaffer has served three years with U. S. regulars, being honorably discharged six years ago. He is alleged to have said that he would not fight against Germany.
