Numerous inquiries have been received regarding the correct pronunciation of the name of the new generalissimo of the allied armies. On paper Foch seems Tetrtonic, says the Chicago Herald, and suggests throaty gutturals of the kind that are no longer popular in the civilized world. But the name is pronounced as If it were spelled Fosh, with a short “o,” like “uh,’’ and almost rhymes with “hush.” This is on the authority of Le Courier des Etats Unis, a French dally newspaper published in New York.
