Nearly $360 a soldier, or a total of $187,000,000 was the cost of the 16 army cantonments built last summer and fall to house 650.000 men. The original estimate of the cost was $134,000.000. By the end of last May, when congress was still debating the project, the engineering corps was fully organized for work.
