Information gathered by the railroad war board indicate* that the voluntary action of the roads merging themselves one great continental system, has ngtfe the transportation problem mucfTeasier to handle; Concrete instances of what has been accomplished are summarized as follows : . , ■ Car shortage has been reduced 70 per cent.' The carriers have achieved the astounding feat of adding to their freight service an amount equal to the joint traffic of Great Britain, Frairfte, Russia, Germany and Austria. Approximately 20,000,000 miles of train service a year have beert saved by the elimination of passenger trains not essential to pressing needs. This has released locomotives and cleared thousands of miles of track needed in the transportation of necessities.
