War Summary
. .The Italian line in the north, where the Teuton* are concenrating their attack* in an effort to break through, ha* thus far withstood the ever-increasing pressure with no new loss of ground, repelling four successive enemy mas* attack* preceded by a terrific artillery preparation. . .The situation, however, remain* extremely critical. Should the Teuton* succeed in breaking through at this point, thu* outflanking the Piave line, a further retirement of the Italian* to the Adige or beyond would become necessary, including the abandonment of all Venicia and the city of Venice. Along the Piave condition* are unchanged, the Teuton* making no further effort* to cross the river, contenting themselves with a violent artillery bombardment while awaiting the outcome of their effort* in the north. __ On the western front Field Marshal Haig, by an unexpected blow between St. Quentin and the Scarpe, advanced hi* line materially, taking prisoner* and a considerable quantity of war material. Berlin admit* the loss of ground in this sector, but state* that* counter attack is under way. Intense artillery activity continue* in Flanders and large bodies of German troop* are being brought to this sector from the eastern front, where no fighting of any consequence is going on. In the Verdun sector the, German* penetrated French *line*. Pari* report* a counter attack expelled them from most of the position* won. In Palestine British troop* have occupied Beit Uret-Tahta, twelve mile* northwest of Jerusalem.
