Another Case of Exemption.
One of the registrars in a Virginia country district tells a story of a negro man, obviously within the pre- • scribed ages and of powerful physique, who turned up on registration day. The registrar had a good deal of difficulty in making the applicant understand the questions. “Do you claim exemption?" he asked. “What’s dat, suh?” “Is there any reason why you should not render military service—why you should not fight your country’s battles?” “Oh, yes, suh." replied the applicant, much enlightened. “Ise gunshy.”
