“Big Bill” Asks For $250,000 Damages From Herald.

Mayor Wm. Hale Thompson, of Chicago, filed suit in the Cook county court Thursday for $250,000 against the . Chicago Herald for libel. His suit is based upon editorial attacks resulting fro mthe mayor’s approval of the pacifist meeting held in that city recently. ' D. A. Jackson acted as attorney for the mayor. The suit against the Herald sounded the keynote of Thompson’s defense of his acts alleged against him. “I have been charged by the press with having refused to invite representatives of foreign nations to Chicago. I have been charged with refusing to permit the sale of liberty bonds in the city hall. Both these charges are deliberate falsehoods. “It is my opinion that because I did not bring suits against the newspapers and their editors at the time the statements were made they have become bolder until they have reached a point of accusing me of being a traitor to my country. Papers are; welcome to publish . anything true concerning me, but when it comes to a point where they resort to deliberate falsehoods in order to turn all against roe, it is time to teach some one a lesson.”
