Evening Republican, Volume 21, Number 199, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 7 September 1917 — U-Boat Destruction Increases. [ARTICLE]
U-Boat Destruction Increases.
The twenty-seventh week of unrestricted submarine warfare shows a considerable increase over the three previuos week's. Twenty vessels of over 1,600 tons, three under tins amount of tonnage and no small crafts were the toll for this last week. The total number of vessels of over 1,600 tons that have been destroyed since this inhuman warfare was begun is 527. To this must be added 175 vessels of less than 1,600 tons and 145 small crafts, making a grand total of 847, counting all ships destroyed. The highest toll of any one week reported was the eigth week, in which forty large vessels were sunk. Close to this was the fifth week with 38. The smallest number of ships destroyed in any one week since the beginning of this hellish business, was the second week, in which the toll was thirteen large* vessels. During this 27th week the arrivals numbered 2,384 and the number sailing 2,432. Nine boats were attacked and escaped. If, instead of naming the number of vessels destroyed, the government would give the actual tonnage lost, the havoc wrought would be more apparent. The German submarine is doing most effective work for that nation and there seems to be but little progress being made in combatting it. .
