CO-OPERATION LIFE TO CITY Community Which Does Not Encourage Growth of Individuals and Industries Cannot Thrive. Speaking before the -gatliering of business men of Baltimore at a banquet in his honor, Charles M, Schwab said: “No large industry can thrive in a community unless it enjoys the good jwiLLimd' the support of that community.” That statement is as true of the small industry as of the large industry. and it is true of the individual - business man as welh- T And there is also truth in the statement that the community cannot thrive which does not give to the individuals and to the small Industries as well as to the large industries situated therein every encouragement to growth and expansion. Co-operation is the life of the city. Wi rhout i t th ere can be no ci t y in the true sense. There may be an aggregation? of houses, of businesses und nt people—-but that does not make a city as we know the city today. The true city of the twentieth century.is a place of schools, a placeoi Churches, a place of wide and wellpaved streets, a place of playgrounds and of parks, a place of beauty and a place of culture. It isr us-weit~n-T>iace where every man Who” is doing his share, for the mutual welfareis roceiving his share of the credit and the protit; where the new industry is given local support in the period when that is needed and still receives that support whefTTt reaches prosperous maturity; where the farmer who brings in the product of his labor may be sure of a market at a price that is fair and just; where the stranger receives every consideration aml is not robbed. In short, the true city is a place where people can live in happiness and contentment, secure in the enjoyment of pleasant hemes, loyal friends and prosperous business conditions—and without th'e-spirit of co-operation it is impossible for a city long to exist.
