Not “Unwise to Let Me Serve,” Answer of T. R.

New York, April 5. —Gel. Theodore Roosevelt issued a statement here towould be created, as has -been suggested, in permitting 'ham to raise a division for active service on the French front. “The American people, he asserted, “are united behind the president in the detrmination to wage effective, aggressive wot for our rights and for the frights of humanity and civilization. I believe that our people now realize that the system of universal military service is the only effective and the onyl absolutely democratic system. --jt “In addition, I believe that the American people desire that in the immediate future we send abroad an expeditionary force.“I have asked permission to .raise a division which would .be in this army corps and under its commander. No unwise precedent can possibly be created by permatting an ex-president of the United States of previous nuhtary experience to raise such a diVisian and to serve worth it ait the front under the command of the general who heads the army corps.”-
