Evening Republican, Volume 59, Number 62, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 4 April 1917 — WE ARE ONE [ARTICLE]
WE ARE ONE
This is a serious, grave moment. Conditions have arisen in which a great people feel that it is absolutely necessary for them to defend themselves against the injuries inflicted by another, nation. We had all hoped that we might not be brought into the great struggle now going on in the old w’orld. Our president has been patient, he has endured insult, the lives of our countrymen have been destroyed upon the high seas; our demands for apology and restitution have been answered by defiance and contiiniuous murder, The president has asked congress to declare war and has appealed to his people to rally around the standard of Old Glory. This should appeal to the heart of every patriot of this great country. Let us forget any differences and let us stand as one man in defense of the great nation which stands for all that is honest and best. Let us not criticize and find fault, but let us rally and uphold the hands of those who have in charge at this time our very destiny. WE ARE ONE PEOPLE.
