Former Treasurer of Newton County Died Monday.
Charles Spinney, former* treasurer of Newton county and for many years a leading merchant of Goodland, died in a hospital at Chicago Heights (Monday evening during'an operation. About two weeks ago Mr. .Spinney submitted to an operation for tfye removal of ulcers of the stomach and was supposed to be on the road to recovery. Monday his attending physician deemed it expedient to perform the. second operation and the patient died before jrecovering from th anaesthetic. The remains were taken from Chicago Heights to Goodland Tuesday and the funeral held there. Charles Spinney was born in Kankakee county, Illinois, Oct, 1, 1867, and died at ’Chicago Heights, 111., March 26, 1917, aged 50 years, 5 months and 25 days. When eight years old he removed with his parents tu Newton county, living on a farm until he wag 16, afterwards e mpluyed ag a clerk in Wm. Banes’ general store at Goodland. In 1892 he was appointed postmaster by President Cleveland, which position he held for four years. He was elected treasurer of Newton county in 1904 and served two terms. Until 1910 he was engaged in mercantile business in Goodalnd and since that time nas been employed as traveling representative of the Stahl-Urban Co. On Fob. 6, 1890, he united in marriage with Miss Daisy Green, and to this union were bom two daughters, Vera and Helen.
