Actual Bullion Value.

The gold and silver coins issued by the government pure gold or silver, but are alii yed with f copper to the extent of mal ing then! ‘ 900 parts fine, as required b; law. If made of pure gold or silver they would be too soft and the copper alloy of 100 parts in 1,000 is for the purpose of hardening them. The difference between the nominal or face value of a coin and its bullion value at the ment of joining represents a profit to ' the government which is supposed to cover the cost of coinage.
