The task was the bringing of a sister collier, the Maumee, from the Mare Island navy yard, San Francisco, to the New York navy yard, where she is to be fitted out with new engines. For the long trip from the Pacific to the Atlantic a special towing device was planned. A powerful winding drum on the stern of the Prometheus held the steel towing cable in even coils. It could be let out or shortened as desired, and the distance between the two heavy vessels was so regulated that a minimum strain was kept on the cable. - ..
