MANY NOTEWORTHY HARNESS RACING FEATS
BRISAC BEING DRIVEN TO VICTORY BY MURPHY.
The past year will go down as a great one for performances in harness racing. Twenty world’s records were made in 1916 and some of the figures bettered have stood the test for many years. r California tracks were not the Beene of a single world’s record, although several western bred and owned horses are listed in the honor class. Prominent among those is the' Wilbur Lou filly Hemet Queen, owned by the Hemet stock farm, presided over by Wr‘ F. Whittier -of San Francisco. Thismiss paced a mile in 2:10% «t Phoenix, which is the world’s best mark for a yearling filly. Previously she had negotiated a half-mile track in 2:22%. Louise Carter, a trotting yearling filly, went the best mile of the season, 2:18%, just falling short of a world’s mark. The feature of the light harness year was the sensational speed of the trotter Lee Axworthy. The stallion established a world’s record of 1:58%. It was shootlng close to the mark of 1 :58

B. Roberts. It was Corbett’s first address to a Sunday school. His audience numbered several hundred? and he impressed them all with his talk on the subject of “Temperance and Clean Living.” Corbett said he had never a drinking man, and attributed his success in the prize ring to his abstinence from alcoholic drink and his simplicity of life. He gave his rules as follows : Eat in moderation, with a lapse of at least six hours between meals. Never drink water with meals, but always plenty of water between meals. TTse coffee no more than once a day. Drink three or four tablespoonfuls of olive oil before each dinner. Meat no more than once a day, and seldom red meats. Sleep at least seven in every twentyfour hours. Take plenty of exercise, especially walking.

of the gelding Uhlan, and surpassed Lou Dillon’s figures of 1:58% for a mare. Young trotters were especially in their glory. The Real Lady electrified grand circuit followers by racing off a mile in 2:04%. Then Volga, a thre’e-year-old, went in 2:04% and Mary Putney, a four-year-old, had a record of 2:04%. St Frisco and Mabel Trash set a number of records for fast raees and together went a dead hept in 2:07%. "Directum I was the star pacer. He beat Dan Patch’s half mile with 55% seconds and broke the old records for a mile and a sixteenth and a mile and ail eighth. Peter Look, Young Todd and Miss Harris M. were the young horses to show improvement in speed. The review of the light harness season in the East is interesting and encouraging. It is heralded as the most prosperous in several years, and the fast performances speak for themselves in showing that close competition was the general rule.

A DIFFERENCE IN THE INVESTMENT
The Western Canada Farm Profits Are Away in Excess. Mr. George H. Barr, of lowa, holds seven sections of land in Saskatchewan. These he has fenced and rentall paying interest on the investment. •Mr. Barr says that farm land at home in held at $l5O per acre. These lands are in a high state of cultivation, with splendid improvements In houses, bams, stables and silos, and yet, the revenue returns from them, are only from two to three per cent per annum on investment. Last year, 1915, his half share of crop on a quarter section in Saskatche--35 per cent on the capital invested—s2s.oo an acre. The crop yield was 35 bushels per acre. This year the same quarter-section, sown to Red Fife on stubble gave 3,286 bushels. His share, 1,643 bushels of 1 Northern at $1.56 per bushel, gave him $2,563.08. Seed, half the twine and half the threshing bill cost him $453.00. Allowing a share of the expense of his annual inspection trip, charged to this quarter-section even to SIIO.OO, and. he has left $2,000.00, that is 50 per cent of the original cost of the land. Anyone can figure up that another average crop will pay, not 2 or 3 per cent on investment, as in lowa, but the total price of the land. Mr. Barr says: “That’s no joke now Mr: Barr was Instrumental in bringing a number of farmers from lowa to Saskatchewan In 1913. He referred to olle of them, Geo. H. Eerton r a tenant farmer in lowa. He bought a quartersection* of improved land at $32.00 an qcre near Hanley. From proceeds of crop ip 1914, 1915, 1916, he has paid for the land. Mr. Barr asked him a week ago: “Well, George, what shall I tell friends down home for you?” The reply was: “Tell them I shall never go back to be a tenant for any man.” Another man, Charles Haight, realized SIB,OOO in cash for his wheat crops in 1915 and 1916. Mr. Barr when at home devotes most of his Time to raising and dealing in live stock. On his first visit of Inspection to Saskatchewan, he realized the opportunity there was here for grazing cattle. So his quartersections, not occupied, were fenced and rented as pasture lands to farmers adjoining. His creed is: “Let nature supply the feed all summer while cattle are growing, and then in the fall, lake them to farmsteads to be finished for market. There is money In it.” —Advertisement,
GOOD REASON FOR SUSPICION
Lawyer Not Sure That Man Was Dead/but He Knew That He Had Been Buried. “It is a rule, to which most good lawyers adhere,” observed a wellknown attorney, “never to tell more than one knows., There was an incident in a western town wherein a lawyer carried the rule to the extreme. “Counsel for one side objected to a person, whose name was on the court’s register for some purpose or other, on the ground that he was dead. The counsel on the other side declined to accept the assurance, and demanded conclusive testimony on the point. “Whereupon counsel for the “other side arose and gave corroborative evidence to the decease of The man in question. “‘But,'air, how do you know the ihan’s dead?’ demanded opposing counsel. “‘Well,’ was the reply. T don’t know. It’s very difficult to prove.’ “ ‘As I suspected. You don’t know whether he’s dead or not’ “ ‘No. But I do know this —they hurled him about a month ago on suspicion P ”

What Is Uric <Addl Everyone has uric acid in the system, but naturally in small quantities. Excessive amount is caused by eating too much meat and foods that ferment in stomach; The kidneys, being the filters of the blood, are supposed to separate and throw the poisons out of the system. Weak, tired and overworked kidneys fail to do this, hencethe mic acid accumulates and the urate salts are carried by the blood to the solid tissue structure, causing backache, lumbago, rheumatism, dropsy, drowsiness, and tired feeling. To overcome the trouble is only a matter of toning up the kidneys, and this is best done by a treatment witlj Anunc, three times a day. Annric is a recent discovery of Dr. fierce of Buffalo, H. Y., and can be obtained at any drug store. Experience taught Doctor Pierce that Axranc is a more powerful agent than lithia in dissolving uric acid, and it » then carried out of the system.
