DEEPEST WELL IN COUNTRY

After Five Years’ Labor and an Expenditure of $300,000 It Reaches 7,214 Feet. p McDonald, Pa.—After five years’ laand an expenditure of over $300.000, the deepest well in the United States today still lacks a few feet of equaling the depth of the world’s deepest wellin Roumania. During 1016 . the bit probing the heart of the earth advanced but 34 feet, making the present depth of the Geary well near here 7,214 feet. The Roumanian well la 7300 feet In depth. Work will be continued by the company drilling the Geary well. It is understood the company has the backing of the United States geological survey, careful records being kept of the strata encountered. At a great depth a strata of rock salt over 100 feet in thickness , was discovered. The wire, cable used in the work of drilling is at present; 10,000 feet in length, tapering in diameter from one and one-quarter inches to seveneighths of an inch. .I I I
