Courtship In China
Cards play an important role in Chinese courtships. When a Chinese young man desires to marry, his parents communicate the fact to a professional matchmaker, who at once runs over in his mind the eligible young women of his acquaintance, and selecfs the one he thinks will make the most fitting bride. He, or, as sometimes is the case, sto, will then call upon the young iroman’s parents, armed with the prospective bridegroom’s card, whereon are written lxis ancestral history, name, and the d of his birth. If the suit proves acceptable, the bride’s card is sent in return; and if the prophecies for the wedding are goqd, the particulars oi the engagement are written on two large red cards nad sent to the friends of each family. is
