SOLDIERS MAY GET CHRISTMAS FURLOUGH Telegram Received By Mayor Spitler From Will Wood Reports Favorable Action on Furlough.
Mayor C. Or Spftler received a telegram late Tuesday afternoon from Will R. Wood, Tenth district congressman of Indiana, now at Washington, concerning the outcome of the appeal made by several Indiana cities, asking for a furlough for members of the Third Indiana regiment. . The telegram from Mr. Wood stated that favorable action had been taken on the same and that the matter had been referred to. Major General Thomas Barry, of Chicago, with power to act. This action probably means that Rensselaer’s soldiers will be home for the Christmas holidays. The request made asked that the furlougn be made for ten days and in it was pointed out that the government would be spared the expense of feeding and housing the soldiers during the ten days, which would recompense them for the railroad fare they would he obliged to pay in transposing the troops to their various stations. *»* « This movement was started severa days ago by patriotic Indiana cities, and petitions were made to Thomas R. Marshall, Senators Watson and Kern, and Congressman Wood, asking that they lend their support in the movement. The plea was made because of the fact that the soldiers would not be mustered out before the Christmas holidays. . , Evidenec of keen disappointment has been written on the faces of the soldiers since the report came out that it would be impossible to let them go home in time for Christmas. Provided that Major General Barry’ sces fit to allow the Indiana soldiers a brief respite from their toils, Co. M will no doubt arrive in Rensselaer within the next two or three days Many Indiana cities are arranging for a celebration for their companies and are well along in this respect, and in many instances foodstuffs have already been obtained that th .y may give a banquet on a very short notice. Rensselaer has proven dilatory in this movement ■ and theie should be some concerted effort on our part.
