David Larrence, young English weaver, comes to Corydon, Indians territory, intending to kill an old enemy. He meets Patrice O'Bannon and his charming daughter, 'Tolnette, and becomes clerk In Colonel Posey's store. In Job Cranmer and his daughter Lydia, recently come from Britain, David finds congenial acquaintances, but he and Doctor Elliott dislike one another. Elliott wants to marry Toinette and tries to poison her against David. Cranmer mystifies David, who overhears spies planning to meet at night in the courthouse. He hides there.
