A New Use Has Been Found For the. Breweries. According to a statement made by Henry Ford, of Detroit, the city breweries in Michigan in which approximately $30,000,000 is invested need not be abandoned because the state has voted dry. “Economically it would be a shameful waste to have them become idle,” said Mr. Ford, “but there is no reason why they should became so. Every standard brewing' plant can be transformed at an expense that is in no sense prohibitive, from a brewery into a distillery for manufacturing denatured alcohol for use in automobiles or internal combustion engines. By practical experiments carried on during the last eighteen months in the Henry Ford and Son laboratories, Mr. Ford has proven two things: That denatured alcohol can be used successfully as a fuel for the gas engine in automobiles and tractors. That denatured alcohol can 'be manufactured and marketed at a price that will permit its general use as a gas engine fuel.' After a long study of breweries and their methods by Mr. Ford an 4 his engineers,he has come to itlie conclusion that all the standard brewing plant needs to be transformed from brewery into a distillery is the addition of a continuous still. And, with raw material on every hand, the same amount of labor, no tax and an unlimited market, the denatured alcohol business will be fully as profitable for the breweries as the manufacture of beer. k Don’t fail to hear the Iris Concert Company at the Methodist church Thursday, evening, November 16t>h.
