Mothers are sometimes so thoughtless as to neglect the colds which their children contract. The inflammation of the mucus membrane, at first acute, becomes chronic and the child has chronic catarrh, a disease that is seldom cured and that may prove a life’s burden. Many persons who have this loathsome diseaes will remember having had frequent colds at the time it was contracted. A little forethought, a bottle of Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy judiciously used, and all this trouble might have been avoided. For sale by B. F. Fcndig. C

Joe Elder Wins Game For Third Regiment With Homer.

Llano Grande, Tex., Oct. 6.—Who got Battery A’s goat was a new cry which has swept this camp, raised by hundred’s of soldiers and shouted from reveille to taps. It became so persistent that for once it completely put to rout what until now had been the eternal, “When are we going home ? ” Not a little indignation spread over camp, especially in the Second Indiana regiment, when it became known yesterday that a pet goat, a mascot of A, had* been-slaughtered within the night and that it was to be the piece de resistance of the noon mess of the Tell City company. Capt. Sim Cummings pronounced the death sentence on the goat after it had eaten a mosquito net, chewed tent ropes, nipped the stalks of banana plants and played havoc with camp flour beds. He is said to have used a bolo knife in executing the pet.

feast of goat meat, but it has had to bear the taunts of the entire camp. The question “Who ate the goat?” has been shouted innumerable times and always followed by the answer “Company L” or “Capt. Cummings.” The company probably will never hear the last of the goat question. The battery had left its goat with the supply company of the Second, but it was stolen in the night by the Tell City company.

The men of the First Indiana infantry cheered as they arose yesterday because the bugler sounded the pay call immediately i-fter blowing reveille. About $25,000 in pay was distributed 'n the regiment. The other Indiana organizations still await the paymaster’s call. The Third Indiana regiment walloped the Fourth Nebraska in baseball by a score of 5 to 3. A feature of the game was a home run drive whichclearedacan al back of center field by Private Joe Elder of the Rensselaer company. Private Swartz of the Kendallville company, did the pitching.

$100 AND COSTS FOR ERNEST L. MORLAN

Judge Hanley Passes Sentence of SIOO Fine and Costs—Prison Sentence Is Suspended. Ernest L. Morlan, defendant in the’ recent perjury case that has been in the local court for the. past week, came before Judge C. W. Hanley this Saturday morning to receive his sentence, on the charge that he was found guilty of by the court. Judge Hanley gave Morlan a fine of SIOO and costs, which in all will amount to several hundreds of dollars. The prison sentence of two to twenty-one

years was suspended by the judge, during good behavior. A suspended sentence means that Morlan is the same as a paroled prisoner anil his conduct in the future will determine as to whether or not the suspension sentence will be revoked. In cases of this kincl. where the prisoner’s sentence is suspended on good behavior, the prison authorities send a man here and the papers are made* out which show that Moilan is a prisoner on parole, and will be such for at least thominimum of two years. Morlan will also have to provide bond.

In view of the fact that the evidence presented by the two factions in the case was so contrary as to leave a reasonable doubt in the mind of the court, the rendered by Judge Hanley in this matter meets with general apporval, and for the most paid; the belief is that the defendant received sufficient punishment from the sentence imposed upon him, and.if he is-guilty on the charge of perjury, this should prove to be a lesson to him, and govern his conduct in the future. Judge Hanley’s decision, however, in all probability will prove satisfactory to the public in general. There are always different opinions ventured in such a case as this and the case recently closed is no exception to the rule. Since the State of Indiana has found

.that Ernest L, Morlan was guilty of the charge upon which he was tried, the verdict that Morlan was guilty must be and should be accepted. Ernest Morlan perjured himself and was punished for it. The laws of Indiana were violated by him and as a result innocent parties were damaged by his untruths, a serious thing, and the sentence passed by Judge Hanley this morning was not too severe and was just irr every way. The trial of the state vs. Jay W. Stockton indicted on the same,Charge as Morlan, will be tried ifi he local court beginning November 15th.

Bank Cashier to Throw Self On Mercy of Court

Ellis Shookman, cashier of the Burrows, Ind., bank, who yesterday confessed a shortage of SIB,OOO, . will throw himself on the mercy of the "court when araigned, according to the father, George Shookman, who had a long conference with his son at the city prison today. The father, who is a farmer living near Decatur, was broken hearted when he learned of his son’s predicament and declared, that he would try to obtain bond for the young man’s release. After the conference at the jail, the elder Shookman said, “I always told my boy to be careful about handling other people’s money. Ellis did not spend any of the money on himself. He told me he made a mistake when he advanced too much money.” Arthur Cravens, head of the state bank department, in speaking of the. case said, “Since I have gone further into the books l am inclined to think that most of it went into overdrafts. I think better, of him than at first. Shookman was an expert with his accounts and it appears that he kept the overdrafts carefully concealed until, as he says, they could be made up again. I think that the most of the money was let out in the last three months.” Shookman wil he taken to Delphi for a preliminary hearing. ; > ---
