Contests For City Tennis Championship To Start Soon.
The contests for the city championship in tennis, in the senior, junior and doubles, will start soon. The contests' will be carried on in much the same manner as they were last year when they created so much interest. Dr. ,M. D. Gwin has again taken charge, and r reports that the darwings for the senior and midgets will take place this evening. No limit has been placed upon the time that these shall be finished and the contestants will be allowed to play off their matches at their leisure. The juniors, those who are under 16 years of age, will draw for their opponents later. Each man defeated in the singles will withdraw from the contests and when the first round is finished the drawing for the second round will take place and these drawings will continue until there are only two left in the tournament and the last two remaining will meet for the title. There will be a match in doubles, known as the challeng'e match. There will be no drawing for this match, and “the contestants will £e allowed to choose a partner, with the provision that they retain the same partner throughout the tournament.
Many of the tennis players have been preparing for several weeks for the tournament and some hotly contested games should result. Matches with the surrounding towns will be arranged and the following will prooably be chosen to play for Rensselaer, in these matches: Dr. I. M. Washbum, Harry English, Wm. Babcock, Elvyn Allman and Paries, although others may show enough class in the tournament to permit them to play in the out of town games. • Wm. Babcock and Harry English went to Chalmers last week and each won in their singles and also took, the doubles from the class of the tennis players of that town.
