Paint and Varnish Remover
To one quart of hot starch (such as is used for laundry purposes) add five tablespoons of lye. Stir until wel) mixed. Paint the chair or article with this solution. Let stand a few minutes, then wash off thoroughly. This will take off all paint or varnish down to the natural wood. After article is thoroughly dried the same can be refinished to one’s liking. Use a cheap brush as this solution soon ruins it. When possible set article in the yard and wash by applying a forceful stream from the hose. It is the lye that does the work, but plain lye and water would not adhere until I struck on to the idea of using it with starch.
