BLADEN’S SMASH BRINGS VICTORY

Stocky Catcher of Locals Slams Ball Over Garden Wall and Athletics Win 6 to 5. i With the count five to four against them at the beginning of the sixth, and Newhart getting stronger every inning, defeat looked certain for the home pets in the game at Riverside Park Sunday afternoon. Lyman led off in the lucky sixth with a single and stole second. Blue was tossed out by Newhart. Bladen was next up and with the count two strikes and one ball, connected with a fast one inside and drove it over the left field wall. The ball cleared the fence at least thirty feet and was never recovered. The wallop put the locals one run to the good and thus encouraged they made it do. Newhart was doing the slabbing for the visitors and except for the, first inning pitched a good game. Newhart is rated the best pitcher in Lafayette and won the pennant for his team in the city league last year. The locals slammed his offerings seven times. Newhart walked four and had three wild pitches which came in the first inning and were extremely costly. Clark was on the peak for the Athletics. The Riversides collected eight blows off his delivery and two walked. Thirteen of them went back to the rathskeller by the breeze route.

Lafayette was blanked in their half of the first but the Athletics started their half with a rush and gave Newhart a fearful lacing, chasing four runs across the platter before they were retired. Eldridge singled to center and went to second on a wild pitch. Parks walked. Fredericks hit to McDonald, who let it get away, and Jimmy scored. Lyman hit safely and Parks counted. Blue was out at first and Lyman took second, Fredericks going to third. Bladen was tossed out at first. Morgan, who took Elder’s place in left field, scored Fredericks and Lyman with a single down the third base foul line, but was out when he tried to stretch it into a double.

dark whiffed three in the second and the Athletics failed to do anything in their half. The Riversides knotted the count in -their third. Brady was safe when Fredericks booted his roller. Lyman made a mess of McDonald’s bunt, Long’s single scored Brady. Robinson two-based, scoring McDonald and Long. Tengen fouled out. Bladen dropped E. McDonald’s pop and Robinson scored. Frederick took Tengen’s pop. Clark tossed out Newhart. Lafayette scored again in the fifth, taking the lead. Lyman threw out Long. Robinson singled. Bladen tossed out Tengen. McDonald singled and Robinson scored. W. Tengen wliiffed. This ended Lafayette’s scoring, and the Athletic sixth has already been related. Dad Swartzell made his first appearance as a umps, calling the balls md strikes and did a mighty good job of it, too. Kirk took care of the bases in his usual efficient manner. The Lawless A. C., of Hammond, will be the Athletics’ opponents next Sunday. Lnieup and summary: RIVERSIDES. R H PO A E Brady, cf 10 10 0 P. McDonald ss 110 5 2 Long, 3b . 1 2 0 2 0 Robinson, lb 1 3 10 0 1 C.
