Cut Ice Harvest Off Short—May Be Chance Yet.

White & Lee were Halted abruptly in the k*e harvest. The temperature took an upward turn Thursday morn* ing and toward evening it be gap raining ami the rain was warm and it soon trnsformed the snow V> water and the ice to a crumbling mass. The houses were only about half filled. It is probable that there will be other opportunities before the winter breaks for good. The rain coming on top of the sif&w caused trouble again in the basements of houses depending on the tile drain on the south side 'of Rutsen street and while not nearly so serious as that of a week or two ago it was bad enough to cause a general resolution that early spring will find an effort on foot to -establish an adequate sewer along that street. The ice gorged in the river and the stream was quite high but not nearly so as-during the. old days before" the channel was straightened and deepened. At 2 o’clock this Friday afternoon the mercury stood at 61 above zero. Persons found it comfortable with the doors open and men worked in their shirt sleeves.
