The Carbonari.
Tbe Italian secret society which took an active part in the struggle for national unity and liberty, and the name of which meant the “charcoalburners’* or “colliers,” only became in slight degree known in 1815. 'l’he constitution of the society remains in great measure secret. Soon after its institution i{ numbered from 24,000 to 30,000 adherents, and its rolls increased so rapidly that in March, 1820, it was said that as many as 650,000 new members were initiated. Jadttle is really known about the secret society; it claimed great of origin, but it probably originated during the last French regime in Nipples. Its movement was directed against the Neapolitan Bourbons, and toward Ital lan freedom.
