Mrs. Jennie Jessen is spending today in Chicago. iMrs. Raymond Burr and Mrs. M. B. Kendall returned to 'Marion today after a visit of* a week with the families of A. O. Moore, Joe Long and others. Miss Mae Stanton-was called to her home at Flora this week by the sickness of her father. Miss Myra Watson substituted as teacher for her during her absence. The Phoenix Club, of young rften and boys and which occupies the old quarters of the Van Rensselaer Club in the K. of P. Mr. and Mrs. Heqry Amsler left this morning for Washington, D. C., where they will attend the national encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic. They will then go to New York City and to Newark, N. J., where they have a daughter living. They will be absent for three or four weeks. County Superintendent of Schools Will Schanlaub, of Newton county, has secured Bishay Quayle to deliver the common school commencement address next June. Mr. Schanlaub is a former Rensselaer boy and has made a splendid superintendent for Newton county, as is indicated by his early plans in securing so able a speaker. The Goodland Herald commenting on the tennis match between Rev. Griffith of that place and Dr. Washburn, of Rensselaer, in which the latter was the victor, says that the minister expects to practice up and return to Rensselaer and even up with the doctor. Rev. Griffith is certainly a fine tennis player and any time he and Dr. Washburn get together them will be a fine contest and a toss up as to who wins. Old age comes quick enough without inviting it. John Maiming and family, of Gillam township, came to Rensselaer this morning expecting that there was to be a big gala week and home coming here, having confused the advertising for the Fowler gala week with an earlier announcement that a home coming was to be held here. Rensselaer seems to have decided, however, not to have anything doing this fall and we believe this is the first year that has gone by without either a 4th of July celebration, carnival, horse show or something of the sort. Sternberg and wife and little son came down from Chicago today to visit their farm south of town, the dredge which is digging the lower Iroquois for which Mr. Sternberg held the contract, and then to go to Medaryville and visit their farm there.
