Police Dog Missing; Has Anyone Here Seen “Alex”?
Since Thursday night of last week Night Officer Critser has been doing his nocturnal rounds without the company of his canine assistant, “Alex. What became of the dog is a complete mystery ad nothing short of a Sherlock Holmes deduction seems calculated to restore the animal to his owner. Alex, was a faithful dog and had made the rounds of the city so frequently with his owner during the past three or four years that he knew just where .to go. Up alley stairways and through the dark corners where crime might have its insipiency Alex bounded with apparent enjoyment. Like his master he slept in the daytime and kept wide awake during the night hours. Officer Critser feels quite lonesome without the dog and if any periton knows anything about him they will confer a favor by giving the information to his owner. The dog is a dark iron gray, has thick curly hair and is of a blocky build. Alex, first came into prominence as the companion of a cigar maker named Pitts, who worked here for some time several years ago. Pitts gave the dog to Officer Critser and Pitts disappeared from Rensselaer about as mysteriously as the dog has. It was reported at the time that Pitts wa3 guilty of an act that frequently results in matrimony unless the perpetrator has longer legs than the constable. Pitts had short legs but what he lacked in speed he made up in forethought, ana he made a timely getaway and did not leave a track that might result in a clew as to where he had gone Pitts had many friends here and so had Alex, and their departures some four years apart left considerable sorrowing but of vastly different kind.
