SOLDIERS WHO WEAR VEILS
British Troops In Southwest Africa Have to Conduct Campaign Under Difficulties. One of the hottest places where the British are fighting is in German Southwest Africa, where General Botha is in command of an expedition against the enemy. The habitable part of German Southwest Africa lies in the center of a sun-scorched, waterless, shadeless desert of shifting sand, and General Botha’s men have to carry everything they need, for nothing whatever can be obtained from the country, not even fodder for the animals. The sand penetrates everywhere, and the heat of the sun Is so terrific that all the troops fighting with General Botha have been served out with veils and “goggles.” Without them, Indeed, it would be impossible to get along at all, and, as it is, hundreds of the Boer burghers, though hardened campaigners, have been so blistered by the sun that they are in hospital. Thtf heat at midday is 122 degrees in the shade and the “shade” is' a sweltering tent. Many of the troops pass that time of the day with nothing on but a sun helmet and a pair of boots.

“How annoying! The English and German accounts of the latest battle don’t agree." “What can you expect? Truth and Veracity ‘dug themselves in’ when the first shot of the war was fired."
BHE QUIT But It Was a Hard Pull, It is hard to believe that coffee will put a person In such a condition as it did an Ohio woman. She tells her own story: “I did not believe coffee caused my trouble, and frequently said I liked it so well I would not, and could not, quit drinking it, but I was a miserable sufferer from heart trouble and nervous prostration for four years. “I was scarcely able to be around, had no energy and did not care for anything. Was emaciated and had a constant pain around my heart until I thought I could not endure it. “Frequently I had nervous chills and the least excitement would drive sleep away, and any little noise would upset me terribly. I was gradually getting worse until finally I asked myself what’s the use of being sick all the time and buying medicine so that I could indulge myself in coffee? “So I got some Postum to help me quit. I made it strictly according to directions and I want to tell you that change, was the greatest step in my life. It was easy to quit coffee because I now like Postum better than the coffee. “One by one the old troubles left until now I am in splendid health, nerves steady, heart all right and the pain all gone. Never have any more nervous chills, don’t take any medicine, can do all my house work and have done a great deal besides." Name given by Postum Co., Battle Creek, Mich. Read "The Road to Wellville," in pkgs. Postum comes in two forms: Postum Cereal —the original formmust be well boiled. 15c and 25 c packages. Instant Postum—a soluble powder—dissolves quickly in a cup of hot water and, with cream and sugar, makes a delicious beverage Instantly. 30c and 50c tins. Both kinds are equally delicious and cost about the same per cup. “There’s a Reason” for Postum. ■—sold by Grocers.

Remarkable Progress Made in Submarine Craft. Increased Speed and Accuracy in Attack Most Important Advance— Nations in Feverish Haste to Outdo Each Other. London. —The Improvements which have been effected In the design and construction of submersible craft during the past few months have been little short of remarkable. At the end of last July the finest underwater craft possessed by the admiralty were the nine new boats of the E class, displacing 728 tons on the surface and 810 when submerged. These had a surface and submerged speed of 16 and 10 knots respectively, carried two 12-pounder guns and four tubes firing 21-inch torpedoes. Almost at the very outbreak of hostilities the submersible, which had always been looked upon as lfkely to prove of value for defensive purposes only, demonstrated Its value as a weapon of offense. Immediately every nation began with feverish haste to lay down underwater craft of new and improved design. Several of these boats are now in commission, and while for obvious reasons nothing may be said as to the new British oceangoing submersibles of the F, V and W classes, there are a number of facts' which may he made public regarding Jjie submersible craft of other countries. The vessels Germany has completed and put In commission since last July are of from 800 to 1,000 tons displacement. Their length is from 213 to 230 feet and they have a beam of 30 feet. Photographs have been published of the U-36, the vessel which captured the Dutchman, Batavier V. It has been remarked regarding her that it would seem that her very size exposed her unduly to danger in the narrow seas and the opinion has been vouchsafed that she will fall an easier prey than would some of the smaller submersibles should she be attacked by destroyers. It is not quite clear what that opinion is fqunded upon and so far the Germans seem to have made very few mistakes in connection with their submarines. It is not known how many boats of this size they possess, but it ipay be taken that since the end of July they have launched and fitted up at least nineteen of these big submersible cruisers, one of which is fitted with engines of from 6,000 to 7,000 horsepower. The new German submersibles are armed with four tubes firing 19*6-

inch torpedoes, an antiaircraft gun and two 14 pounders, and there is reason to believe that while the underwater speed of these boats is only about 12 knots at most their design is such that they can travel at 20 to 24 knots on the surface. But it is not only in speed and size that developments have been made. The '‘sight” of the submarine has been improved and the modem periscope is fitted with a compass by which it is now possible for a helmsman to steer to fractions of a degree instead of to one-quarter points as before. The accuracy with which a torpedo can be fired" is greatly Increased by this and In the newest boats it Is possible to obtain the bearings of an enemy ship some miles away and set a course which without the periscope having to be shown above water, will bring the boat to a point from which a torpedo may be fired with absolute certainty of its hitting Its target
Fessenden, N. D. —Bearing the pain for 12 hours of a bullet wound through his leg, Herman Piedt, the ten-year-old son of a farmer of this county, stoically kept silent about his injuries and divulged them only when he became so lame that he could not move. He and another boy were shooting gophers with a small rifle, which was accidentally discharged, the bullet going through Herman’s leg.
Volcano in California Is Under Close Observation. Forest Service Co-Operates With Geological Survey in Recording Dangerous Peak’s Activity as Basis for Scientific Study. Washington. Mt. Lassen, Cal., whose violent eruption of May 19. places it in the first rank of volcanoes now dangerously active, has become the subject of an informal co-operative study by the geological survey and the forest service. At the request of the survey, a telegram has been sent from Washington instructing the officers of the Lassen national forest, in which' the peak stands, to continue observations of the volcano’s activity and keep a record to be used as a basis for a scientific investigation by J. S. Diller, a government geologist, who will take up the work later. The observations are being made by forest rangers at the scene and from a Ire lookout tower on Brokeoff mountain, a few miles north of the crater, where the forest service last year kept watch on the numerous eruptions which occurred from May to September. It is not known whether a cloudburst started the last eruption by precipitating rain down upon the molten lava in the crater* or whether melting of the snow on the peak, with consequent flowing of water into the crater, caused the accumulation of , steam which blew a river of mud out of the mountain. Mr. Diller, who made a study of the volcano last year, said that he inclined toward the melted snow theory, adding that the bright glow reported as appearing on the clouds of smoke and steam over the crater is a reflection of the red-hot matter uncovered by the eruption, indicating that the volcano is in a more or less dangerous mood. The river of mud which was shot out of the north side of the crater and down Hat creek has damaged government and private property, says a Wireless to the forest service from San Francisco, destroying bridges whicn were necessary to permit the entrance of live stock that are grazed on the Lasjen forest every year. mL Lassen is regarded as exceptionally interesting from a scientific viewpoint, according to the geological survey, inasmuch as it is the only active volcano in the United States proper, is very accessible to observers, and appears to be full of dangerous possibilities. There is much that is not known about volcanoes, and Lassen is expected by geologists to furnish a consider-

The Merrie Monarch touched 90,798 patients, particulars as to whose cases are all recorded. James II “cured” 350 at one swoop. Queen Anne, it wfil be remembered, laid sovereign hands upon Dr. Samuel Johnson for scrofula.
