Mayor Betters Case With Alibi.
It was generally believed that Mayor J. Leb Watkins, of Newcastle, after he had testified in his own behalf, had strengthened his case considerably. Ollie Skinner, the chief state witness, testified that he had made arrangements on May 3, 1914, with Watkins for the mayor to accept $lO a week for protection money while Skinner operated a blind tiger. Watkins testified that on the said date at 3 o’clock in the afternoon he had opened the baseball season in Newcastle by pitching the first ball and making a few remarks.
