Old Cable Cause of Much Telephone Trouble.

About 100 telephones were out of commission Sunday and Monday on account of underground cable defects, but there is not apt to be a repetition of the trouble. When the conduit cables were laid some time ago a section of old cable was used at the south end of the alley running north and south between Cullen and Weston streets. This cable had been used for overhead construction for some ten years but when tested seemed all right and apparently was water tight. The heavy rains the past week, however, flooded the tile conduit and soaked through the old cable and put all the telephones thus connected out of business. The cable had “checked” and weakened as it was drawn through the tile. The section for 376 feet in length. A new cable was ordered and replaced the old and the service thus restored with small possibility of recurrence.
