Mrs. Violet Lucas arrived from Oregon Friday to visit her mother, Mrs. Rosetta Sumners. Philip Barnard returned to Chicago Saturday. Mrs. Joseph Bergman returned from Gary last week. L. B. Springer came out from Chicago Monday. Mrs. Helen Behms, of Cadillac, Mich., is visiting her mother. Omar Timmons was elected Sunday school superintendent at Gifford. Margaret Demko arrived from Gary last week to spend the summer with her parents. Mr. McKay, of the Piclor Land Co., was in Newland Monday. Mr. Piclor has left the Springer ranch and no longer holds an interest there. Geo. Hayden broke his wrist while wrestling Sunday. Christian Workers topic: “The Gall of Foreign Missions for Money, Men and Prayers.” E. A. Reif leader. Offering taken. Chas. A. Harvey, Gus Hoffman and W. B. Neeves arrived from Chicago Monday. Messrs. Harvey and Hoffman have been caring for Mr. Oliver’s interests in the city and will locate here this summer. They are fitting the scale house up for an office and batching quarters combined. Mr. Harvey has land interests here. Mr. Neeves returned to Chicago. Don’t forgdt the chicken supper at Gifford Saturday evening. Menu: chicken, pickles, sandwifches, salad. All are invited to bring a small article well wrapped for the penny auction. Strawberries and cake will be served. L. C. Villard returned Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Roher, of Hammond, visited A. H. Wilson Sunday.
Frequent rains are preventing much needed work in the fields. The serious illness of Mrs. T. W. Hoover, of Newland, caused a telegram to be sent to her sister, Mrs. W. T. Miller, of Winston-Salem, N. Car., and she arrived Wednesday, accompanied by her father, A. EL McMahon, of Mocksville, N. Car. Mrs. Hoover’s conditipn is somewhat improved at this writing.
