Had to Be Broken in.
Shortly after the Civil war a lady in New York asked her colored cook to get her husband to come over and help move some furniture. She noticed that the negro man had several bad scars on his head. “Was your husband in the war, Dinah?” she asked“No, ma’am.” “How did he get all those scars on his head?” she asked. “Oh, dat’s whar we’s had words together.” “How could you, Dinah? He seems like a nice man,” said the mistress. “Oh, he’s good ’npugh now, but it took a lot of work wid de tater masher to persuade him to be good.”
