Says Newton Township People Are Not Back Sliders.
Rennsealer, Ind., April 22, 1915. Editors Republican: I see that The Democrat says that seven of the petitioners for the interurban subsidy eelction have experienced a change of heart and will not. even support the proposition and that there is a 'growing sentiment against the proposition. As assessor of Newton township I have been going over the country quite extensively and I have come into contact with many of those who will vote on the proposition and I can not substantiate the statement made in The Democrat. I feel that Newton township residents and land owners have business foresight enough to know that the construction of the road will be a great thing for them, will, increase the value of land and result in conveniences that are worth the cost. I believe that the public-spirited men who signed the petition for the subsidy are men who well knew what they were doing when they did so and who will regard it h slam on their honesty and intelligence to have it said that they have retrograded since they signed the petition. There are men who will sign a petition one day, a remonstrance the next and then sign back on the petition the third day. We believe Newton township people are the kind who do a thing because they know it to be right and who do not permit selfish persons to influence them against their action. The Democrat quotes no names, but bases its information upon the statement of a “prominent farmer.” The Democrat editor may have had a dream or may be so prejudiced against progress that he is willing to misrepresent in order to defeat this important project, but if there is any prominent farmer who has backslidden he should have the frank honesty to discuss the matter with those who are associated with him and not furnish his jiame in the blind to be treated as*a means of defeating the progressive -■'movement he helped inaugurate. So far Erhardt Wuerthner, who does not hide his light under a bushel, has not presented a petition for a touring car. We have some hopes of Erhardt and rather expect to see him one of the main boosters before the campaign closes. Permit me to say in conclusion that a very thorough investigation during tfce past ten days convinces me that there are more today than at any other time who favor the subsidy and that the sentiment in its favor will continue to grow, just as all good and progressive issues are dedeveloped as they are better understood. Let us all stand for the progress of Newton township and help get this railroad by supporting the subsidy tax. Very truly, C. C. PARKS, Assessor of Newton Township.
