Will China Be Denied As Market for U. S. Produets.
Japan, despite several claims of friendship for the United States, occasionally does some act that Causes considerable uneasiness. Right now it is exhibiting great activity in China and it is very pfobalble that it contemplates Complete control of China’s market, which the nation* of the wo fid have so long held open to all on equal term®. The United States has enjoyed a great trade from the far east and it is very important that the market be kept open, but to do so will probably require that positive demands be made of Japan. If we should quietly acquiesce and let the Mik'ado’s government assume command the ever-growing market in China might be'’forever lost to us. *
Japan is crowded, burdened with debt, filled w4th ambition, and not lacking in conceit. It is not improbable that Japan will take advantage of the fact that other powers are engaged in iwar and not able to offer rexistence and may undertake to close the doors otf China to American products. This is a great diplomatic question confronting the administration and will add to the perplexities occasioned by the European war and .the Mexican problem. It is hoped that the Wilson-Bryian combination can handle it without sacrificing American honor.
