Eschbach Wants Counties to Get All of Automobile Tax.
Jesse Eschbach, republican floor leader of the house at Indianapilis, has been able to get his bill providing that all auto tax collected be returned to the counties from which collected through the house and it stands a fair chance of passing the senate. The old law provided that all the money be collected by the state and divided among the counties in three funds: one-third according to the mileage of improved road in each county, one-third of the total amount collected in each county, and one-third distributed equally to all counties of the state. The first year the law was in effect $150,000 was collected at a cost of $31,000. Last year there was collected between $350,000 and $400,000 and it cost the state SBO,OOO to collect it. Mr. Eschbach properly charged that this is absolutely unwarranted extravagance Mr. Eschbach says his measure will save 80 per cent of the cost of collection and distribution. The yearly tax plan is to be eliminated. Each car owner after once getting a tag would simply record the number of the tag each future year. This would cost 4 cents. The measure was fought by Rep resentative Branaman, democratic floor leader, but he was unable to get enough backing in his party to defeat the bill. The main opposition is that it might let a few of the “faithful” out of jobs. They have been coming in for a considerable part of the yearly expense which the measure proposes to eliminate. Norman B. Ream, whose wealth is estimated at $50,000,000, died in New York Tuesday. He formerly lived in Chicago. He is said to have been one of the 25 richest men in the United States. The Hammond Times is discussing the project: “Who is the boss, the husband or the wife?” It seems to be soTt of split up down this way and occasionally a rolling pin is employed to settle the question. England has threatened to starve Germany by cutting off all food supplies. Germany responds by saying that if that Is the policy 600,000 prisoners captured from the allies will starve first, then will come the 11,000,000 Belgians and French Inside the occupied territory. .. Business dull? There’s a fine tonic at hand. Try Republican advertising.
