DELPHI TRIUMPHS OVER RENSSELAER
Visitors Proved Too Strong and Locals Went Down to a 25-17 Defeat.. The red and black met their second defeat of the season Wednesday at the high school gym, when the Delphi quintet came out on the loiig end of the 25 to 17 score. They deserved their victory, as they outplayed the locals during the entire game. The locals did not put up the usual exhibition, tout if they had played their usual game there would have been another story to tell. Rensselaer seemed unable to locate the center of the hoops, while the Carroll lads took, advantage of every opening. Gardner was the stellar light for Delphi, and his eleven free throws spelled defeat for Rensselaer. 21 fouls were called on the locals, who played a more aggressive game than their opponents, but the latter played a far headier game. The Delphi crew had it on the home team in size. Julius, the heavy Delphi forward, afforded the spectators considerable amusement in his effort to get over the floor and at the same time- keep his feet under him.
Coach Parker sent his ponies out to start the first half, saving the regulars for the last half. For once in his long career Harry went wrong, but not in. his judgment, in sending the second team in, but for not keeping them in the entire game, although they closed their half of the argument five points to the rear. It was the general opinio nthat the so-called second team played a better game than the regulars. Worland was called immediately after the whistle blew for fouling. Gardner made his free -throw good and Delphi went into the lead. Healy came back with a pretty basket, sending the locals to the front. Rhoades shot another goal, increasing' the home lead. Wdrland was called for fouling. Gardner again scored. Rhoades scored another hoop, but Gardner came right back with a field goal, and then repeated the performance, evening up matters. Warren counted for Rpnsselaer. Hemphill went in for Warren. Hemphill was called on a foul. Gardner counted bis free throw. A double foul was called but neither side scored. Gardner fouled and Healy scored, making the count 9 to 7. Loomey counted from the field for Delphi and the count was knotted. Healy fouled and Gardner tossed -the basket. Gardner scored a field goal. Loomey countey anotbeerrHealey got a free throw for Rensselaer. Gardner found the hoop for another ringer. Delphi fouled and Red made it good. Score end of first half, Delphi 16, Rensselaer 11. The entire first team went in the second half. Walker' fouled but Gardner missed. Loomey counted. Eigelsbach scored two field goals and Rensselaer stock ’Spared. Curnick fouled Gardner and Delphi had another point. Babcock fouled and Gardner added another for Delphi and repeated the performance when Walker held. Gardner added another by the foul route. Billy did likewise for Rensselaer. Rensselaer at this stage was playing too aggressive and the Delphi count was continually growing larger through Gardner’s (free ones. Delphi was playing a defensive game and stalling for time Five men were guarding most of the time and Delphi made few attempts at field goals. Gardner thtew his sth straight foul. Swain went in for Walker. Several fouls were called on the locals (but Delphi failed to add to their score. Gardner finally added one point by reason of Swain’s fouing,*’ and repeated the performance/a (few minutes later and ended Delphi’s scoring for the afternoon. English added a point for Rensselaer, closing the score of the locals. The gong sounded a few seconds later, leaving Delphi with a 7-point lead. Gardner was the star for Delphi and Chuck Rhoades and Red Healy did the best work for the locals. Billy couldn’t seem to get his eye, on the basket or Rensselaer would probably have come closed to winning. 'Much practice will be needed by the locals in basket throwing, for without points they can’t expect to win. Coach Parker has his proteges displaying good teamwork and if they improve in their basket work better things may be hoped.
