Obituary.
Grover Smith w*as born near Seneca Lake, New York, April 17, 1835. Died at his home in Wheatfield, Jasper county, Ind., Thursday evening, Dec. 17, 1914, aged 79 years and 8 months. When a’ small boy his parents moved near Joliet, 111., living there until his enlistment in Co. B, 100th Illinois Volunteer Regiment; on Aug. 3d, 1862. He served until his regiment was mustered out at the close of the war, receiving an honorable discharge. He was the last of six children, four boys and two girls, claimed by death. He was united in marriage to Hila Rodgers shortly after the close of the war. To this union two daughters were born, Mrs. Cora Gibbs, of Lowell, Mich., and Mrs. Maud Siedler, of Nowlin, S. Dak. He was married to Lottie Ferrell, Jan. 21, 1879. To this union six children were bom, Joseph A, Mary Yeagley, deceased; Mattie Bunch.
of Centralia, 111., Grover, of Wheatfield; Bessie, who died in infancy, and Frank, of Wheatfield. Some eleven years ago Mr. Smith retired from active life, moving from the farm tp Wheatfield. Here he spent the closing years Of his life, serving in some capacity his fellow men as citizen, as opportunity afforded. The past three years he was constantly afflicted. Perhaps he bore more bravely, more submissively, his affliction than we are capable of understanding. He has gone to his long home, having made peace with God. The funeral services were held at the home Sunday, conducted/, by Rev. C. E. Downey, Of Mt. Ayr. Interment at Wheatfield cemetery.
