Mrs. W. A. Huff, of Indianapolis, a resident of this city a number of years ago, is visiting relatives here. She had been visiting a daughter in Hammond for about a month.

John Hopdeman lies very near death at his home on North College avenue. It was thought that he could not survive last night but he rallied and there is apparently no change since yesterday. He can last but a few days, however.

Two silent fire alarms were turned in Sunday. The first was from the Monnett School for Girls, where a hole was burned in the floor beneath the kitchen range. The second was from the George Kaufman residence, the old Kelly property, but it proved to be nothing more than a flue burning out.

Wallace Miller, 21 years of age, son of John E. Miller, of Union township, lost the index finger of his right hand in a hunting accident last Friday. In company with one of Jack Reeder’s boys he was hunting and went te> swing his gun over his shoulder. It was cocked and was discharged when the finger was over the muzzle. Lucky it was no worse. Young Miller has been attending Valparaiso university and came home to recover from a ease of measles.
