While imprisonment for debt as it at one time existed in English and American Uw, by which a debtor might be arrested and imprisoned for mere liability to pay /his creditor, no longer exists in the United States, the statutes of the majority of the states provide for the arrest of a defendant in a civil action under certain conditions. such as? fraud, or torts, or embezzlement, etc.
